Digging through Old Sketches
It's weird how I looked through my old sketchbooks and it's like traveling through a wormhole and realizing that I didn't allow myself to create as much as I know I wanted to. There was a long stretch of time where I let everything get to me and I wasn't able to create anything and times where I felt inspired and didn't take it as far as I know now I could have. I guess that's the beauty of learning and growing as an artist. Funny story about art and drawing, I remember one time where my assignment for class was to do gestural drawings of people sitting and someone walks up on me as I was sitting in the lobby waiting for my bus to come. I was off in dream land sketching someone sitting who had rather interesting hair and just a cool overall form. A classmate walks up behind me and says "What are you doing? Are you drawing that person sitting over there?!? " I was so mortified because I felt like if the person I was drawing heard them say that they would think I was a crazy stalker person. I was thinking of that creepy moment from Napoleon Dynamite where he leaves a drawing in someone's locker. Oh yes! I am super paranoid. Maybe not as funny in hindsight but I was sure embarrassed. I think I'd be a little more comfortable now that I'm older and have more experience. Who am I kidding? It can be super awkward drawing random people without them knowing because you feel a bit like a spy. I guess that could always be a cool thought? Imagine you're an undercover spy & you have to give graphic notes of this new world around you!
I would post a couple sketches, but there's honestly not much to post. I was very insecure about creating art and wasn't until recently where I got much confidence. Still feeling like a slippery slope. I'm thinking about redoing some of the sketches with more of my current style, with all the cute, bold & humorous touches I would add to it now. There was a St. Patty's Day sketch I did with a heart that needs serious updating. I really did not know how to work with colored pencils, because everything I did looked flat and void of character. I know my art now isn't always everything but I really do try to strengthen my skills. I've learned the importance of making yourself look at the world and try to find inspiration through various mediums and to not give up after sitting there for a few minutes but I also can't sit for too long. It's a weird juggling act for me. I never know how long too long is. I'm the type of person who could work on something for 3 days straight, so I try to give myself breaks.
Speaking of which, it's 4am & I have classes tomorrow. I'm really excited about my classes but I'm a night owl. It's complicated. :)
I'll show you what I come up with if I revamp some of my old art or I find something cool.
